Mike Murray

1949 - 2025

It is with deep sadness that we have to share the news that Mike Murray passed away on 6 February 2025, aged 75. His family shared the following message with us.

First and foremost Mike was a family man; a devoted husband and father and we send our heartfelt condolences and love to Caz, Leanne, Joe and Sam and Mike’s extended family and friends.

Mike was a rugby colossus, he had a stellar rugby career - including playing at Loughborough University, Wasps, a spell in France, Manchester, Sale, Cheshire and Ashton on Mersey.  Mike’s impact when he joined Ashton in the early 80s was immense and immediate.  It  was no coincidence that this sparked a tremendously successful spell for the club with numerous promotions and not too many losses.

Mike was 1st XV captain for 2 seasons (1983-85) and club president for 11 years (1999- 2010).  He was a charismatic leader, a wise mentor, a great player, a great coach, a great man and great company.  He will be missed by so many.

Mike’s teaching career was equally successful and notable. Teaching Physical Education and Sports Science at William Hulme Grammar and Loreto College. He continued working well into his retirement years; writing textbooks, setting exams, marking exams and working with the respective examination boards.

Mike Murray RIP.
