22. Council and Senate Election Procedures and Committee Membership

Council and Senate both have elected staff members in their composition. The election of staff members to Council and Senate is undertaken by Academic Registry. The Assistant Secretary to Council is responsible for Council elections and the Assistant Secretary to Senate is responsible for Senate Elections. The Assistant Registrar Governance has oversight of election governance, rules and procedures.
This section also outlines procedures for other types of committee members on Council and Senate.
22.1 Council
- The election of staff members to Council is undertaken by Academic Registry.
- The categories of ‘staff other than the academic staff’ and ‘General Assembly’ are governed by Ordinance IX paragraph 8. For the election of Senate members to Council, only Seante members are eligible.
- Members of Council appointed by the Students’ Union are notified to the Secretary to Council at the beginning of each academic year. The members will normally be the serving President and the Democracy and Communities Executive Officer.
- Appointments to Council by the Alumni Association are undertaken by the President of the Association and will normally be the President.
- Co-opted members of Council are proposed by Governance and Nominations Committee, which prepares written descriptions of the roles and capabilities required of new members. Members are appointed by Council and serve for 3 years with a maximum of 3 terms.
22.1 Council
- Where insufficient nominations are received for vacancies that are the responsibility of Senate, the Vice-Chancellor may fill outstanding vacancies by invitation.
- The election of members to Senate by the academic staff, by General Assembly and by students is governed by Ordinance IX paragraph 8.
- Students appointed by the Students’ Union Executive to Senate are notified to the Secretary to Senate at the beginning of each new academic year.
- Co-opted members are invited to Senate membership at the request of the Vice-Chancellor on behalf of Senate.
