The challenge gives employees time to reflect on five different themes split across five days:
- Day 1 – Intersectionality: How do different parts of who we are (eg race, gender, culture) affect our experiences and interactions at work?
- Day 2 – Recognising privilege: How can we use our privilege as a force for good?
- Day 3 – Inclusive language: Have you ever used words and later realised that they were hurtful and not inclusive?
- Day 4 – Code switching/Masking: Have you ever had to change the way you speak or act to fit in?
- Day 5 – The Big Promise: Will you join millions of others today to turn words and thoughts into action?
Below are some examples of colleagues from across the University who reflected on their experiences of Race Equality Week in previous years on the EDI blog:
Anti-Racism Symposium
The Symposium for Anti-Racism, taking place 12 February 2025, will be an opportunity for members of the University community to reflect on the initial priorities laid out in our Race Equality Charter (REC) action plan and take stock of our progress. We’ll be celebrating our achievements, restating our commitment to becoming an anti-racist institution, and outlining our next steps on this journey.
The Symposium will begin with an opening address from Provost Professor Rachel Thompson, followed by a panel discussion with Chief Operating Officer Richard Taylor, Director of EDI Services Veronica Moore and Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and anti-racism and intersectionality expert Dr Angela Martinez Dy.
Attendees will then be able to explore an exhibition showcasing the anti-racism projects and research being led by staff and students across both our campuses, as well as campus partners and external partners. The full schedule and details of the exhibitions can be found on the event website.
The event will take place 2pm-4pm in the West Park Teaching Hub and is open for all to attend. Refreshments will be provided.
