Dr Huaiyu Yang

Senior Lecturer in Biocrystallisation

Areas of expertise

(bio)pharmaceutical crystallisation, continuous crystallisation processing, protein expression, biocrystallisation, Process Analytical Technology (PAT), liquid-liquid phase separation, upstream and downstream biomanufacturing, freeze-dissolving technology, sustainable water treatment, industrial crystallisation optimisation, nucleation, machine learning in crystallisation

Profile

Dr. Yang's research is dedicated to advancing next-generation (bio)technologies aimed at improving the manufacturing processes of (bio)pharmaceuticals.

His primary focus is on applying (bio)crystallization techniques and protein expression to reduce production costs, enhance efficiency, and ensure that (bio)medicines are of the highest quality, purity, and stability. This includes innovative approaches to expression and biocrystallization of proteins within cells, which has the potential to revolutionize biomanufacturing.

With extensive experience in controlling and optimizing industrial crystallization processes, Dr. Yang integrates Process Analytical Technology (PAT) tools alongside a deep understanding of the thermodynamics and kinetics involved in crystallization, especially in complex environments like liquid-liquid phase separation solutions.

In addition to his work in (bio)pharmaceuticals, Dr. Yang has pioneered innovative technologies, including freeze-dissolving methods for producing fine particles and precipitation crystallization for water treatment and the recovery of valuable metals. These advancements contribute significantly to sustainability goals, such as achieving net-zero emissions.
