Profile
Thomas has extensive experience researching social issues relating to alcohol, drinking culture and pubs. His work has addressed the changing consumer habits relating to alcohol consumption and pub going and has a particular focus on the social and cultural role played by alcohol. A recurring theme in his research has been the importance of identity and group belonging to understanding the social role of alcohol. He has focused on men’s drinking, and its role in male friendship and bonding rituals. His most recent work has addressed the changing drinking habits of older drinkers and the role of the pub in tackling loneliness and social isolation. A current focus is the causes and impacts of pub closures in the UK.
Thomas has extensive media experience. His work has featured in leading national and international newspapers and magazines including: The Observer, The Telegraph, The Wall Street Journal, The Economist and skynews.com. He has been interviewed on BBC Radio 4 on numerous occasions and contributed to live radio discussions at local level (eg BBC Radio Nottingham, BBC Radio Leicester).
