Loughborough Business School hosts Economics Network Early Career Researchers Workshop

From 30 April to 1 May 2025, Loughborough Business School welcomed early career economics researchers from across the UK to a training workshop focused on developing high-quality teaching practice.

This two-day event saw academics from across the UK higher education sector come together to hear from experienced presenters providing an exploration of best-practice for teaching economics.

Part of a long-running annual series from The Economics Network, this year is the 20th anniversary of the event, which has helped hundreds of newly appointed teaching staff to stay at the forefront of teaching practice.

Speakers offered tips and advice on how to efficiently design, deliver and assess. The sessions also explored ideas around integrating new technology and enhanced interaction into their teaching. Sessions included:

  • Designing economics teaching and assessment
  • Engaging students with economics
  • Making teaching work for your career in economics
  • Voice and presence in the classroom (with VOX Coaching, presented by a Royal Shakespeare Company trained actor)
  • Workshops on:
    • Communicating to different audiences
    • An introduction to artificial intelligence
    • Personalised feedback on teaching ideas, resources, and courses

Co-organiser Chris Wilson, Senior Lecturer in Economics at Loughborough Business School, said: “This event, and the Economics Network more generally, have helped so many economics lecturers to improve their teaching across the country. It’s a joy to be involved with and it’s especially exciting for Loughborough to have hosted the event this year.

“At Loughborough Business School we put teaching innovation and excellent student experience at the heart of our educational offering, and we have recently completed an exciting refresh of our BSc and MSc Economics programmes. To have this chance to collaborate with colleagues from across the sector is a fantastic opportunity to bring in fresh ideas and share what we’ve learned.”
