Professor Tom Jackson reappointed as Independent Scientific Advisor at the Alan Turing Institute

Tom Jackson

Professor Tom Jackson of Loughborough Business School, has been reappointed as an Independent Scientific Advisor (ISA) for the Innovate UK BridgeAI programme, led by The Alan Turing Institute.

This initiative focuses on accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in high-growth sectors such as construction, transportation, agriculture, and the creative industries while addressing systemic barriers to innovation.

A year on from his initial appointment, Professor Tom Jackson has been reappointed as an Independent Scientific Advisor (ISA) within the BridgeAI programme at the Alan Turing Institute (ATI). In this role, he will continue to collaborate with key partners, including Innovate UK, Digital Catapult, The Hartree Centre, and the British Standards Institution, to support organisations seeking to adopt AI solutions or build their own AI capabilities.

He is joined as ISA to the ATI by recent fellow Loughborough University appointee Diwei Zhou, a Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, School of Science at Loughborough University.

The ISA initiative specifically targets organisations facing unique challenges that cannot be readily addressed through other components of the BridgeAI programme or existing training opportunities. Professor Jackson’s expertise will be instrumental in guiding these organisations towards innovative and sustainable AI solutions.

Reflecting on his reappointment, Professor Jackson said: “This role represents a continued commitment to advancing the digital decarbonisation movement and fostering sustainable AI practices that prioritise environmental responsibility. By supporting SMEs in the UK to adopt AI technologies, we are not only strengthening the nation’s position as a global leader in AI development and research but also ensuring that AI innovation aligns with the urgent need for environmental sustainability.”

This reappointment highlights the ongoing relevance of digital decarbonisation and sustainable AI development. It also builds on Professor Jackson’s collaborative work with Professor Ian Hodgkinson on AI Compute and the Environment as part of the OECD.AI Policy Observatory Network of Experts (ONE.AI) and as a part of the Technical Working Group for the Greenhouse Gases Protocol. Together, their efforts continue to drive both domestic and international progress in the field of sustainable AI, ensuring that the UK remains at the forefront of this critical area of innovation.
