Dr James Fleming

MEng Engineering Science (Oxford), DPhil Engineering Science (Oxford)

Pronouns: He/him
  • Senior Lecturer in Intelligent Control Systems

Background

Dr James Fleming is a Senior Lecturer in the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering at Loughborough University, where he works within the Control Systems Group. Dr Fleming has research interests in the theory and application of model predictive control (MPC) and embedded machine learning (ML). These applications include automotive advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), motorcycle active safety systems, optimisation of power systems, offshore wind turbines, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), and mobile health apps for behaviour change.

Dr Fleming obtained the MEng and DPhil degrees in 2012 and 2016 respectively from the University of Oxford, where he studied Control Engineering and developed algorithms for Model Predictive Control of uncertain state-space systems as part of his doctoral research. From 2016 to 2019 Dr Fleming was a Research Fellow at the University of Southampton, developing driver behaviour models and optimal control algorithms for the G-Active (Green, Adaptive ConTrol of Interconnected VEhicles) project, which aimed to save energy and reduce emissions in the energy management of conventional, hybrid and electric vehicles, partnered with Jaguar Land Rover.
