Professor Downward is an applied economist who examines the causes and consequences of engagement in sport, physcial activity and leisure, drawing implications for, and evaluating policy, management and strategy. He has published two books on the economics of sports, and edited two further handbooks on sports economics and management. He is currently coediting a handbook on sport in Europe and engaged in studies of the determinants and impacts of sport and physical activity, volunteering and sports officiating on health and well-being, social capital, inclusion and exclusion, human capital and labour markets, and the outcomes of sports contests. He also has an interest in the research philosophy, methods and ethics of economics, has published in these areas, and developed and delivered ESRC and other postgraduate training workshops in these areas.
