The University offers expert-led opportunities alongside your Schools’ field-specific development to help you thrive during your doctorate and explore various career pathways.

To support your growth, you are expected to engage in a minimum of 10 days per year (pro rata) of professional development. 

Opportunities to get involved  

The University's Researcher Development and Pathways Programme (RDPP), overseen by Enhanced Academic Practice, offers curated, high-quality, meaningful and memorable development opportunities that promote cross-university, national, and global connectivity. Contributed to by a wide range of professional services, these opportunities are available in several engaging formats:

  • Live and interactive workshops and events – offered in-person, online, or in hybrid formats.
  • On-demand and self-directed workshops and resources – includes video tutorials, guides, and interactive modules.
  • Bespoke one-to-one (in-person/online) appointments – including buddying, mentoring and coaching, available in-person or online.
  • Placements – with private, public and third sector organisations.

To support your development, opportunities are structured around eight core themes:  

  1. Career Planning: To help you navigate your career path in academia, industry, or entrepreneurship, including CV and interview support.
  2. Digital Essentials: To enhance your digital skills for writing, presenting, communicating, networking, data analysis, and referencing.
  3. Dissemination & Impact: To improve your communication and presentation skills for various purposes, formats, and audiences, including how to engage the public with your research.
  4. Leadership & Collegiality: To develop your people management and leadership capabilities, including building and strengthening collaborations.
  5. Project & Personal Effectiveness: To empower you manage your research and personal effectiveness, including time management, objective setting, prioritisation, confidence building, and self-care.
  6. Research Culture & Environment: To help facilitate your integration and contribution to the wider research community at the University.
  7. Research Essentials: To simplify complex research processes and methods, providing you with fundamental knowledge and tools for success.
  8. Responsible Research Practice: To ensure you undertake rigorous and integrity-driven research that meets ethical, legal, and professional standards.

The RDPP closely aligns to topics listed in the UKRI’s Statement of Expectations for Doctoral Training and Vitae’s Researcher Development Framework.
