Meeting your supervisor

Doctoral Researchers should ensure that they attend monthly meetings with their supervisors as a minimum, and that these meetings are recorded and added to the Co-Tutor system.

By meeting with your supervisors on an at least monthly basis, you ensure that communication is maintained with your supervisory team. You should use this time to update them on the research progress being made. It also provides the opportunity for you disclose any issues you may be experiencing. Early intervention is crucial to keep your research on schedule.

Before your first supervisor meeting, you are encouraged to look at the New Doctoral Researcher Induction checklist so you can discuss any elements you are unsure about with your supervisor.

Your first Supervisor meeting

For your first meeting with your supervisors, you should use the Supervisory Partnerships Expectations Form. The form is intended as a prompt for honest, supportive discussion between the Doctoral Researcher and the supervisory team.

The topics in the form should be discussed and a short note made for each point to capture the agreement reached between the supervisory team and the Doctoral Researcher. Once completed, the form should be uploaded to Co-Tutor by the Primary Supervisor.

Subsequent meetings

Doctoral Researchers should ensure that they attend, as a minimum, monthly supervisory meetings (in line with the University’s Attendance and Engagement policy).

Doctoral Researchers should ensure that the monthly meetings are recorded and added to the Co-Tutor system.
