Day of the viva
Guidance for external examiners
Right to work check
Ensure that this is completed prior to the viva – if this is not completed before the viva occurs, the University is not permitted to pay the Examiner fee, nor is it permitted to reimburse any expenses incurred.
During the viva
During the viva, the following should be considered as best practice:
- Make sure the Doctoral Researcher is comfortable, use opening questions to help put them at ease
- Make sure all questions are clear and relevant – repeat if necessary
- Be aware of non-verbal communication
- Keep viva on track, keep an eye on time ensuring suitable breaks where necessary
- Keep notes about the delivery of the viva and conduct of examination/examiners in addition to your academic notes on the examination
- Draw to close, excuse student and discuss outcome at the end.
Irregularities or issues during the viva
It is hoped that every viva goes well and as planned. If, however, there are any irregularities or issues that arise during the viva, we advise that you take notes regarding the irregularity or issue. The Internal Examiner is responsible for informing the DCO of any issues which arise, but if you wish to raise any concerns direct, you can contact the team at p.g.research@lboro.ac.uk or on 01509 228292. A Doctoral Researcher may have grounds for appealing the outcome of a viva if there is an irregularity so notes from the viva can be helpful.
