Salary scales

The University is part of the National JNCHES pay agreement, which negotiates an annual cost of living increase through collective pay bargaining each year, usually implemented from August.

All jobs at Loughborough are graded between grades 1-9. The grades are agreed via a job evaluation process and reflect the level of skill and responsibility involved in your role.

Employees whose jobs fall in grades 1-8, will progress by one pay point each year, until they reach the maximum of the main pay scale for their grade.

The University reviews the pay of staff and can award accelerated pay increases and progression into the excellence range of the pay scale through an annual reward process.

Real Living Wage Employer

In 2023 Loughborough University became an accredited real Living Wage employer.  Accredited employers pay the real Living Wage on a voluntary basis and is non-contractual. The real Living Wage is higher than the Government’s minimum or National Living Wage, and is an independently calculated hourly rate of pay that is based on the actual cost of living. It is calculated each year and announced by the Living Wage Foundation in October/November.

Given the nationally recognised issue of pay compression at the lower end of the pay spine, the Loughborough Real Living Wage supplement has been introduced for the 2025/26 pay year, effective from 1 April 2025.

The Loughborough Real Living Wage supplement applies to staff within grades 1-4 (spine points F05 to F18).  This supplement is subject to regular review and adjusted annually to provide differential take home pay on top of the national pay spine point.

Please see the L'boro Real Living Wage supplement document for details.
