Eligible Programme

The University has four scholarships available for full-time and part-time postgraduate research (PhD) programmes at our Loughborough and London campus: two scholarships available to start in the 2024/2025 academic year (starting in April 2025 or July 2025) and, two scholarships available to start in the 2025/2026 academic year (starting in October 2025 or January 2026).

Amount

100% of the tuition fees plus a stipend set at the recommended UKRI rate (currently £19,237) per annum for a period of 3 years for full-time PhD study, subject to annual uplifts. The scholarships are funded through university funds.

Students will be expected to fund their travel and visa costs (where required) through other sources.

Criteria and eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

- Currently hold an offer of study (conditional* or unconditional) for a postgraduate research (PhD) programme at Loughborough University (Loughborough campus or London campus). Scholarships for those wishing to study part-time will also be considered**.

- Show evidence of exceptional academic achievement

- Are considered an 'at-risk scholar'

It is difficult to provide a definitive definition for an 'at-risk scholar', but the University works to a framework which asks:

- Is your home located in a region of conflict/war such that your life or the lives of your family are in danger, or such that you could be forcibly displaced due to persecution?

- Are you, or your family, at risk of imminent imprisonment, injury, death or persecution?

- If you are currently in the UK but were to return to your home country, your life or safety would be at much greater risk.

*Any award made to an applicant holding a conditional offer will be subject to those conditions being met in full.

**If you're currently outside the UK and wish to study part-time, the University won't be able to sponsor you in the UK on a student visa. For those based in the UK and wish to be considered for a part-time PhD, note that if you're in full-time employment, you'll not be eligible for a scholarship. Only those working part-time, have caring responsibilities or other requirements may be considered for an award on a part-time basis.

Application procedure

- The scholarship application procedure is an open competition.

- Applicants may only apply for the scholarship after an offer for a place in one of Loughborough University's PhD programmes has been made. Do not submit your scholarship application until you've received your offer letter. Applications will only be considered if all parts of the form are completed in full.

- Applicants in possession of an offer from Loughborough University (conditional or unconditional) can apply for the scholarship using the application form.

- A confirmation email will be sent when your application has been received.

- All those applying will be notified of the outcome of their application by email.

- If your application is shortlisted, you'll be given further information on what will happen next.

Deadline to apply

  • Deadline for April 2025 or July 2025 entry: 24 February 2025
  • Deadline for October 2025 or January 2026 entry: 23 June 2025

Applications received after the closing date won't be considered.

Review panel

Applications will be initially shortlisted and the final decision on the awards will be made by a selection panel at the University.

Applications will not be considered unless the applicant is holding an offer at the time of submission.
