We offer a User Experience Design programme that you can take as either an MA or an MSc, so you can choose the option that suits you best. This advanced degree will help you improve your knowledge and skills in User Experience (UX) Design and Interaction Design. You can also choose to specialise in Virtual Reality, Inclusive Design or in designing for devices other than smartphones. In our classes, you will learn how to do user research, find ways to create better user experiences and design new products. You will also work with real companies and build a portfolio of your work.

The MA/MSc in User Experience Design teaches you to become a designer who puts people first. You will learn to create innovative ways for people to interact with products. The course develops both your creative and analytical skills through a range of projects. For example, you will learn to design interactive experiences combining digital and physical elements. You will also learn to use new technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Extended Reality (XR) to improve user experiences.

During the programme, you will study essential ideas and methods in UX design. This includes design research, usability, accessibility, data analysis (both qualitative and quantitative) and different types of prototyping, such as interactive, video, and experience prototyping. You will also learn about interaction design, social design, storytelling, teamwork and project management. In addition, you will work on a major project that helps you practice and improve your skills at a professional level.

This course is offered alongside a similar programme called User Experience and Service Design. The User Experience Design programme focuses on developing you as a UX specialist in either Virtual Reality, Inclusivity, or Interaction Design beyond smartphones. However, the User Experience and Service Design programme focuses on service design and gives a broader view of user experience.

Both courses allow you to choose an MA or an MSc. If you select an MA, you will work on creative and big ideas. If you choose an MSc, you will focus more on research and data analysis.

Why you should study this degree

UX Designers create products and services that improve people's lives. Our goal is to graduate designers who focus on people and can find new opportunities for innovation. They learn to design products and services that meet user needs and provide great experiences. We teach you how to become a skilled UX designer. The User Experience Design programme has six aims:

  • Build understanding and skills: Help you to understand User Experience Design and learn the skills needed to mix theory, creativity and practice.
  • Encourage new ideas: Encourage you to think in fresh and different ways when creating ideas by learning about people and their environment through real research.
  • Design meaningful experiences: Teach you how to design and develop digital and non-digital experiences that are transformative, responsible and sustainable.
  • Develop essential abilities: Build your organisational, technical, teamwork and creative skills so you can work in many areas of UX Design.
  • Challenge preconceptions: Challenge your current ideas about UX Design by letting you work on practice-based learning and live industry projects.
  • Prepare for the future: Enable you to become an independent learner and professional in UX Design, ready for further study or a career.

In addition, you will work with leading companies on real projects. You will have the chance to join UX design competitions and attend guest lectures on interesting topics. We will guide you in creating a strong portfolio and help you take the next steps toward the UX career you want.

 

What you'll study

Our User Experience Design (MA or MSc) programme will give you a solid foundation to develop the skills and knowledge needed for a career as a UX professional. You can also do this programme part-time – for more information about part-time study patterns, please contact us.

Once you start the programme, it may be possible to switch between (1) User Experience Design and (2) User Experience and Service Design if you decide the other programme suits you better. After the first few weeks, you will choose which award (MA or MSc) you wish to work towards. We will help you select the option that is best for you.

The aim of this module is to introduce the human-centred design process and core experience design principles and their application to the design of interactive products and services.

The aim of this module is to broaden the student designer's experience and skills to include knowledge of and competence with usability evaluation tools and principles to support the experience design process.

The aim of the module is to introduce students to the experience/service design profession by tackling an industry-set brief and delivering an evidence-based and meaningful design outcome for a sponsoring organisation. The module will enable students to enhance their professional teamwork, collaboration, communication, and reflection skills and support their development towards becoming an effective practitioner.

This module aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills (literacy) needed to design user experiences utilising immersive technologies, such as virtual, augmented and mixed reality (collectively known as Extended Reality: XR). DSP830 will provide students with the new media literacies necessary for immersive futures, gaining a theoretical and practical understanding of fundamental human-centred issues of access, agency, engagement, presence, digital identity, and embodiment.

Upon completing this module, students will comprehend what it means to design, build, and interact in persistent, fantastical and functional virtual worlds, literacies critical for their future careers.

Compulsory MA award

The aims of this module are for the student to:

  • integrate and apply knowledge, skills and values from other modules in a significant user experience design project over an extended period;
  • provide a significant example of the student's design and innovation capability for their CV and portfolio.
  • facilitate the student's further development from postgraduate student to professional designer.

Compulsory MSc award

This module aims to develop the student's in-depth knowledge about a problem or topic of UX Design to extend investigative, project management, and report writing capabilities. The student realises this aim by undertaking a research project. The research project will propose and answer a question (or questions) that may enhance UX research and practice.

The research projects will employ quantitative or qualitative methods, drawing on human sciences and design methods to improve human-technology interactions. Students will use theoretical understanding from empirical studies and test prototypes of novel interactive systems. These interactive systems are designed to enhance the user experience, e.g., improving human performance and cognition, and creating a positive overall user experience.

We will give you useful feedback on your work throughout the year to help you reach your full potential. You will be assessed through different coursework, such as submitting design projects, making group and individual presentations and discussing your work.

Entry requirements

Our entry requirements are listed using standard UK undergraduate degree classifications i.e. first-class honours, upper second-class honours and lower second-class honours. To learn the equivalent for your country, please choose it from the drop-down below.

We will consider applicants from all academic backgrounds, not just design. You must have a genuine interest in new technologies and be comfortable working with data. Experience of software development/coding is not necessary. We value and promote diversity of all forms on our course. We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate a genuine desire to use new technologies to design better user experiences.

All students, of any nationality, who are from a design-related background should provide a portfolio showing examples of work relevant to the MSc User Experience Design. This should be around 10 pages long. You must demonstrate your understanding of human centred design, including your design process, the project outcome, and how you considered the end user’s experience. We encourage you to critically reflect on how you could improve your technique and project outcomes.

If your degree/background means you do not have a portfolio, your personal statement must explain your interest in user experience design and why you want to study on the MSc User Experience Design course.

English language requirements

Dr Panos Balatsoukas is a Lecturer in Experience Design, specialising in human-computer interaction and digital health. With a PhD from Loughborough, he leads projects like immunity passport design services, offering students insights into user-centered design and data-driven technologies.
