Teacher Education at Loughborough
Teacher Education at Loughborough University trains individuals to teach the 11-18 age range. All individuals on the PGCE course experience teaching the 11-16 curriculum as well as post-16, and are qualified to take up teaching posts in all secondary schools covering the 11-18 age range.
The Loughborough PGCE has been designed by university staff and teachers from schools, and is intended to help student teachers on the path to becoming well informed and reflective professionals.

Research and teaching
We are renowned for the high quality courses we offer in Physical Education and Mathematics. Highly rated in Ofsted inspections, Loughborough is a category 'A' provider which represents 'outstanding' provision.
The Department of Mathematics Education represents one of the largest groups of mathematics education researchers in the UK and has an international reputation for research into, and practice of, the learning and teaching of mathematics and statistics. The Department hosts two research centres: the Centre for Mathematical Cognition and the Centre for Early Mathematics Learning.
We attract staff and students from all over the world, making it a diverse and stimulating environment in which to study. Active in high quality research across the broad spectrum of mathematics, we have an international reputation, with 100% of Mathematical Sciences research impact rated 'world-leading' or 'internationally excellent' in REF 2021.

The Department of Mathematical Sciences is based in the Schofield building, located centrally on the University campus. The building has recently undergone a £4million refurbishment to equip it with dedicated resources for mathematics students.
As a postgraduate student you will benefit from 24/7 access to computer labs in the Schofield Building and will also benefit from the co-location with the Mathematics Learning Support Centre.
The Loughborough University campus also offers the largest concentration of world-class training facilities in the country, is home to national and regional centres for many sports and has been named 1st in the world for the ninth year running for sport-related subjects by QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 - 2025.
As a result, our students have access to bespoke training and testing equipment and can also benefit from the National Centre for Sport and Exercise Medicine – East Midlands (NCSEM-EM), an Olympic legacy funded project aimed at improving the health and wellbeing of the nation.

Our trainee teachers are encouraged to be reflective and develop their own style of teaching mathematics or physical education, meaning that they are often sought after by employers, with many gaining jobs within our partnership schools. The outstanding provision (Ofsted, 2018) of teacher education at Loughborough goes a long way to ensuring that any Loughborough PGCE graduate has the skills and reputation to succeed in a teaching career.
