Ellen Johns

Course
Sociology BSc
Subject area
Criminology, Sociology and Social Policy

I chose Loughborough after visiting the campus on an open day. Loughborough is such a friendly university and I felt welcome and at home straight away. I love the range of modules we can choose from to study. I love the core sociological modules, but it is great to be able to choose from other areas too, for example I have studied criminology and psychology modules too.

The teaching quality at Loughborough is excellent. The lecturers are so passionate about what they teach and they are always so willing to help students. My favourite module was the dissertation module. I was able to complete an independent research project on a topic that was important to me, choosing the methods and conducting the analysis was a great culmination of my three years of teaching and my placement year.

The department has provided me with great support, both academic and pastoral. The department and university have a huge variety of ways in which you can reach out for help.

I completed a placement year at the Department for Work and Pensions as a Social Researcher. Since then, I have secured a graduate role as a social researcher at the DWP. My degree gave me a huge amount of confidence in my ability as a social researcher and gave me the fundamentals of research methods through the first- and second-year modules.

I would 100% recommend studying sociology at Loughborough. You will receive huge amounts of support from lecturers, the university and fellow students and will have the opportunity to study a wide range of contemporary issues! Campus is really bubbly and friendly. There are always people out and about, so it feels very lively!

My course has really pushed me to believe in myself and strive for things I want to achieve! There is a real sense of pride in being a Loughborough student which I will carry with me after I graduate.
