Master's degrees

We run degree programmes that offer the opportunity to develop skills in a range of genres, and the impetus to work towards completed creative work of publishable standard.

Our MA programmes develop students through a wide range of professional development training and opportunities, encouraging them to think about their transferrable skills to interpret the literary cultures of the twenty-first century and to develop careers as writers depending on which of our programmes they choose.

Our courses offer an inclusive and practical approach to textual study and expression, enabling students to enhance an understanding and creation of contemporary writing through peer learning and hands-on projects.

The MA Contemporary Literature equips students with the analytical skills to explore literatures of the twenty-first century, including contemporary cultural issues such as #MeToo, the Covid pandemic, and climate change, and understanding how literary prizes influence the production of today’s literature.

The MA Creative Writing and the Writing Industries encourages students to find their strengths and to write towards publication. It also exposes students to diverse development training and opportunities, enhancing their transferrable skills and careers as a writer.

The programmes connect through an innovative module that sees students collectively contribute to the dissemination of contemporary literature by planning and delivering a literary festival in the summer term.
